Satanic Bay Area-Walpurgisnacht Black Mass

Us: Satanic Bay Area is your friendly local DIY Satanist congregation. SBA is not affiliated with the Satanic Temple, the Church of Satan, or with any other national Satanic religion, although many of our members are also members of those groups. We celebrate diversity, equity, compassion, and reason, and provide a safe religious space for people who might not otherwise feel welcome in conventional churches.

The Day: Walpurgisnacht (Val-Purg-Ish-Not) is the traditional springtime rite celebrated in parts of Europe at the end of April. Popular myth has long held that on Walpurgisnacht, witches from around the world gather in secret to worship the devil; in reality, Walpurgisnacht is a night when Modern Satanists celebrate individualism, diversity, and selfhood, and commemorate the history of great outsiders who dared to challenge the prejudices of their age.

The Event: Doors open at 6 PM, the ceremony commences from 7:30 to 8:30…ish. (We’re always a few minutes behind–what’re you gonna do?) The ceremony features live music, guided meditation, and a sermon on the importance of human rights and civil liberties in the face of toxic, racist, queerphobic religious and state encroachment.

Attendance is free, although we welcome voluntary donations to cover rental costs if you’re so moved. Potluck donations are also appreciated but not necessary. No tickets required, although we appreciate RSVPs at SatanicBayArea@gmail.com so we can try to guess who to expect.

This event is open and welcome to Satanists, non-Satanists, witches, pagans, queers, weirdos, freaks, looky-loos, or just everyday ordinary people who want to love and celebrate their rights as individuals. First-timers are great, and we welcome any and all questions. It’s not even going to be that weird. …well, okay, it’s still a LITTLE weird, but only to the degree that you’d be disappointed if it wasn’t.
