Rumi Songs: A Collaboration with Franklin Abbott and Bandelion

Poet Franklin Abbott has set a number of poems by Jalal Al-Din Rumi to music, and Bandelion is creating dance to accompany. Franklin has been a friend and mentor from afar of Bandelion’s Eric Kupers for over 3 decades. We first collaborated on performance at the NOMAS Men And Masculinity Conference at Brown University in 1994 and have kept an artistic dialogue going since then.

Franklin will talk about the process of creating the Rumi Songs, then sing the songs accompanied by Keith Penney and friends, while Bandelion dances inclusive choreographies and improvisations aimed at touching the sensually spiritual heartaches of Rumi’s words. We will complete the performance “ritual” with an opportunity for anyone that wants to get up and dance together, led by Bandelion.

This is a rare treat for Bandelion to collaborate with Franklin and for Bay Area audiences to witness Franklin in person. There will be much Queer Magic on hand and an opportunity for spontaneous connections of many kinds.

One afternoon only at the beautiful and accessible East Bay Community Space.
